Write the qualities of what a lover is that you want from them and the qualities of the kind of lover you have to offer them. Write your hopes of a future together with them. Sign it and kiss it with your lipstick. Dust paper with the powdered cinnamon. Place this “letter” under the red candle that has their photo attached to it. Take the four pink candles and tape one photo each of you to the pink candle. Arrange these candles in a fire-safe/proof container (aluminum baking pan or something else), making sure children or pets cannot get to them. Dust all the tops of the candles with a pinch of cinnamon. Arrange the candles with your intended’s candle in the center and your candles (with your photo pointing to their candle) in the North, South, East, and West. Part three of a three part series on Reversible or “Double Action” candle preparation. Now that you have identified, purchased and “flipped” your reversible candle to reveal the wick at the black end of the candle and carved a name or command into the candle, it is time to anoint this candle and get it burning to send back all that negativity from whence it came from! Using the “Up and Down” Method of Anointing Reversible Candles (Most commonly used for two-colored, reversible or double action candles) Many people who do candle work will use two colored candles, most commonly known as “double-action”; candles to work both way for them in the particular situation. These candles commonly come in red/black, green/black and white/black. There are those who make their own candles and the combination of the colors may be personal to each individuals needs. The first photo shows that you always clean your candle with lemon juice to “clear” and “clean” the candle. Then, to anoint a candle in this manner, you would need to put the different oils in your hands, one for each condition (positive and banishing) and grasping the candle horizontally the candle in the center with the appropriate color, move from center to ends (see photos) alternately, moving the banishing or black prayer or intention first, then the other color hand and intention second. This is the first of three parts regarding Reversible or “Double Action” candles. Look for the other parts in the next few days. Reversible candles – you see then in candle shops, religious supply stores or botanicas all over the country. The question is, which one is correct? We are going to unveil the truth about glass encased 7 day reversible candles as well as teach you how to properly use a free standing reversible candle in this blog post. History of Usage of Reversible Candles These candles were known in the past as “double action” candles and even today in some regions due to their two color appearance. The free standing candles are about 9 to 10 inches long and about 2 inches thick (about the size of a 50 cent piece). There are glass encased reversible candles (see photos). The colors vary, with the most popular being red/black (red for love or fast luck/energy), green/black (green for money) and white/black (white for health/peace/house blessings). I have seen some in a yellow/blue and a yellow/green pour years ago at a botanica (latino candle shop) in Los Angeles. I can only assume that these were either for success (yellow) and peace (blue) or for the two goddesses Ochun/Yemaya and the yellow/green one was for success and money or for the goddess Ochun and the God of Iron, Ogun. These candles intentions is to send back to the sender any ill thoughts that someone may have for you that is thwarting forward movement in your life. For example, if you have a neighbor over and they begin to comment on your nice car, pretty things in your home, good taste in clothes; they may be jealous and could burn a candle to bring financial ruin to you. Their intentions could be selfish as they just might be too lazy or uninspired to get up and make their way. These negative people would rather bring everyone down to “their level of income”. All of a sudden, money wastes through your hands, you have repairs to make, and it seems that you are spending faster than you make it. Uh Oh, time for a green/black reversible candle! Double Action or Reversible Candles are traditionally “flipped” when used and prepared in a certain way. This is covered step-by-step in my other post, Preparing Free Standing Reversible Candles, contained in this blog website. Just go back a day by scrolling or search in the search bar for other related posts. Candles as seen at most stores with the red wax on top. A rare find at candle shops – a factory made reversible candle with the BLACK wax on top – someone’s got a clue! Why would you not burn the color first, then the black? As you can see by the first picture above, 99% of the candles you will find in a bontanica or spiritual candle shop will have the COLOR on top -exactly what we DO NOT WANT! WHY? Because you want to send or burn off the negativity (black) that surrounds you in your life (red for love, green for money, white for peace/health/house blessings). If you were to burn the red/green/white off first, you may just be compounding the situation as you are “burning away” your money, love life or peace! OK so, my second group of photos shows a CORRECT reversible candle in glass – with the black on top. They are out there – not popular with most candle shops – but there are a few who will pour them the correct way. This is the second of three parts regarding Reversible or “Double Action” Candles – Enjoy! Free Standing Reversible Candles gives you the freedom to inscribe anything you want onto and into the wax of the candle. The carvings (see photos below) can then be filled by hand rubbing anointing oils and herbs or sachets into the letters so that they are infused and will burn along the length of the candle. Here is an example of the candle before inscribing with letters. A traditional Free Standing Reversible Candle found at most religious shops and candles. Notice that it is made with the black poured first with the red added at the top. Carving your Candle Taking a knife or a traditional carving tool (some have various names for them; I have two white handled knifes that I use – one for good/blessing, one for naughty/banishing); begin to cut off the tip of the candle on the red side (remember, we want the red to burn LAST) (see photos). Above: Cutting off the red tip of the candle squarely so it can sit on the red end. Below: Make sure red end is level so the candle does not tip over. Then, we carve the wick from the smooth bottom of the black part of the wax to expose the wick so we can begin our candle burning from THIS end. Above: Exposing the wick on the black end of a reversible candle Below: Carving words, symbols or numbers that are of importance to you into the side of the wax. Using HERBS with Candles After oiling and imparting your intention or prayer into the candle, you may apply appropriate herbs and spices to the candle to boost their efficiency. For example, using love oils on a red or pink candle then rolling the candle in ground cinnamon, is a traditional method of “heating up” a love spell because of the warming qualities of cinnamon. To apply herbs, simply sprinkle a fair amount onto a plate, wax paper or brown paper bag, rolling the oily candle back and forth over the spices, then proceeding with your candle burning ritual. Using SACHET POWDERS with Candles There are different ideas that exist about the using of sachet powers or “powders”, which consist of talcum powder with ground herbs and drops of the essential oils used in creation of the anointing oils for the particular situation. Some schools of thought think that the sachet powder is applied in lieu of herbs and spices; some believe that sachet powders are applied last, after the oil and herb or spice. One common thread in these different modalities is the reason for blowing the sachet powder onto the candle (as opposed to rolling the candle in sachet like herbs) (see photos). Sprinkle sachet onto the whole length of candle as demonstrated in photos. Spread the sachet powder or herbs across the candle if needed. Roll candle, if necessary, in the spilled sachet to get even coverage. African traditions give history and substance to blowing the sachet onto the candle. The TWISTING Technique to Apply Anointing Oils on Candles This technique is used when you need to take control, manipulate or command over the proceedings; such as court cases, the law, a marriage, “bend over”, commanding, controlling or compelling individuals that are making life difficult by causing drama for the ones around them. First, place anointing oil in hand, distribute evenly on both palms. Second, grasp candle in the middle with both hands turned opposite of each other. Lastly, twist candle as if you were wringing out a wet washcloth. Repeat until completely anointed.
