Here is a note I received this morning regarding my most recent posts by a very observant reader: Hello Ms. Jacqueline, I have read with interest your most recent blog post and am confused. How are we supposed to “label” our candles? Do we tape the piece of paper on the candle — you just say to use the piece of paper for the black candle? And what do you do with the papers? Do they burn up with the candle when it burns? I have read you can carve or scratch the name(s) in the candle numerous times. And I’ve read that the petition papers are folded either towards you or away from you, depending on the kind of spell you are doing, and then set under the candle somehow, like under the saucer the candle sits on. I don’t want to do this wrong as I am a beginner. Thanks! Lawanda – TX Lawanda, Thank you for being so observant and this must have directly touched your mind as you were concerned that you are doing “it” right – “it” being proper candle burning. I would have to say that almost 90% of candle spells that I have used – and do – use the 7-day glass encased “novena” type candle – like the ones you get at the Lucky 13 Clover Spiritual Supply This is a photo of Pink St. Jude Candles used for Love Spells This is not to say that you could not use candles that are known as free standing candles, but attaching name papers, petitions or photos to free standing would almost assuredly bring about a fire – something no one wants! How I attach a name paper is to place it at the base of the candle with a piece of scotch tape. This way, the candle is “labeled” but not at the top, where it will scorch and possibly catch fire. By the time the flame gets to the base of the candle, very little flammable wax is in the the glass, and less likely to catch the paper on fire. For petitions and photos, I lay them under the edge of the glass, with the glass rim of the candle along the edge of the paper, so that in the last few hours of the candle’s burning, it does not damage the photo (sometimes you want to re-use the photo, as in love spells) Thank you for a great question!...

When dress your candle with anointing and blessing oils, sachets and herbs, you magnify and consecrate your candle to your purpose intended. It cannot hurt if you can use all three ingredients, and is the desired method; however if you have only the oil, do not be discouraged. After you have cleansed and carved out symbols or names (if need be) onto your candle, it is time to apply anointing and blessing oils, sachets and herbs to your candle. The use of these items will clarify and give strength to your intention and work. The quantity of items may be one or a combination of more than one item. If you are planning to use more than one oil, sachet or herb, it is suggested that you wash your hands in between steps with Florida Water, a traditional citrusy-floral cologne used in spiritual work. You may also use rubbing alcohol, but make sure that your hands are completely dry before lighting a match or a lighter. You may now place the second layer of oil on top of your first oil application. The only exception to that is if you are using various oils from a related family (i.e. oils from the money drawing family such as pay me, money stay with me, prosperity, money come to me, etc.) In this case, washing your hand in between is not necessary. It is important that you do not use any negative drawing (such as DUME or Revenge oils) with positive oils (such as money drawing or love drawing) as you may be creating a condition that may be hard to take care of once activated by the candle being burned. How to Apply the Oil Now that you have assembled your items and have written out your petition paper or desire, it is important to decide which hand movements to use when applying the oil to the candle before commencing the work. Below are three different traditional techniques with each method and purpose described in detail. NOTE: It is important to the success of your candle burning work to apply the oil correctly or else you will have mixed results ore a candle that will not perform for you in either a positive or negative manner. The UP Technique of Release, Reverse and Banish Energies The anointing of a candle to release you or others from a condition or situation requires you to anoint the candle from the base to the top with the appropriate oil to banish, send away, release and reverse that particular energy back into the Universe and/or to the point of origin or the sender. Holding the candle in your oiled hands, you will slide your hand in one direction from base of candle to the tip of the wick. You will NOT slide your hand back down the candle to the base, but release candle at tip and then re-grasp candle at the base and repeat the motion, stating your intentions each time you slide your hand from base to tip. SEE PHOTOS Once you are done, place this candle in a holder or on a plate or saucer with your petition paper under it or your photograph near it and begin to pray for blessings on your candle. Light candle and meditate on the outcome that you desire. It is preferable to keep this petition candle burning until its’ end; however if you cannot keep it burning for various reasons, do not blow the candle out. Wet you fingertips with spit and “pinch” out the flame to extinguish it. To blow out the candle means that you are finished with its’ work and you...

A couple of weeks ago, I burned a white 7-day glass encased candles for clients paying homage to St. Joseph, who’s feast day was March 19th. The candle that cracked gives me thought that I should write about using petition candles with safety. I had the candles burning on the altar for three days, all of then clear (meaning no waxy residue on the inside of the glass) and no blackened smudging on the glass. Sometime late Saturday afternoon, one of my daughters came knocking on my bedroom door, wakening me from a long overdue nap. ‘”Mom, on of the candles broke and the paper is burned!”‘ I went downstairs followed by the other daughter, and yes indeed, the candle had cracked around the “wax line” clear through and up one side where the wick had lain on the side of the glass. Ironically, where the tip of the wick touched on the inside of the glass created a tobacco brown scorch mark on the name of the one who had purchased the candle for her baby’s father (Saint Joseph is the patron saint of carpenters, fathers and heads of households). I immediately made a mental note to send an e-mail later in the day to her, asking how things were going, but secretly knowing that something serious had happened. When the client had responded to my e-mail inquiry, she had said that she had received notice from the Franchise Tax Board that she would be the recipient of the ex’s tax refund to cover back court ordered child support, something that she had not been receiving. Another time that I had an interesting occurrence with candles cracking was a time in my early days of spiritual work. I had been burning a 7 African Powers candle for a situation and had left it sans saucer on my glass top altar. Our family had left to attend a barbecue that Sunday afternoon and while we sat stuffed and lazily making small talk, suddenly a wave of some unknown panic brought me out of that mood. I had the feeling that I just had to get home because something was wrong. Since we were 8 city blocks away, I quickly dove back home, searching the house, only to find that the candle that I had been burning had cracked and its’ wax was dripping across the glass topped altar and onto the hardwood floor below. I had made it just in time to stop a potential disaster from occurring. Here are some things to consider when burning candles: 1. Make sure you are setting your candles in a small saucer, cereal bowl or a flat cookie sheet with some clean kitty sand to catch the drips. 2. Make sure that you do not have paper, curtains and other items hanging directly above the altar or area where you are burning the candles to avoid catching those drapes or pieces of paper on fire. Candle can create intense heat in a small area that could potentially ignite these materials. 3. Make sure your candles are in a place that is undisturbed by pets, family and children. Sometimes small children and even kitty are mesmerized by the flickering flame. Getting too close can burn them and potentially tip over the candle, starting a fire. 4. If using name papers, prayer cards and photographs in your candle burnings, visit them often and attend to them when needed. This does not mean that you cannot leave your home during a candle burn; I have left town after securing my candles and was at peace the whole time...

Once you have chosen a particular color or type of candle for your candle work, the very first thing you must do is clean off all that may have been applied, whether accidentally or intentionally, to the candle in shipping. Candles are mass produced in factories, therefore picking up dust and lint, substances, solvents, and even negative energies given off by the people handling the candles. Candles are consider like a conduit, absorbing and transferring energy of either spiritual or material from one realm to another. Clean your candles before applying oil with either alcohol or lemon juice. When alcohol is used, make sure you thoroughly dry your candle before lighting it to minimize the possibility of fire. A more traditional and safe method is to use lemon juice. The juice and oil of the lemon is considered a neutralizer and “chaser” of any substance that may have been on the candle before cleaning, whether dust or oil because of its’ acidic nature. The oil of lemon and/or lemongrass, an Asian grass, is used in various spiritual cleaning products known b y the names such as Chinese Wash, Cut and Clear, etc. To clean your candles, simply take lemon juice on paper toweling or napkins and rub the candle over all areas of the candle, inside the glass, the outside area of glass, including the top of the wax and the wick. The technique is the same for the cleaning process on a free standing candle as same on a glass “novena” type 7-day candles as well. After cleaning, let dry before adding oil, herbs or minerals to the top of glass candles or rolling the free standing candle in the mixture. You may clean a series of candles at the same time by simply applying the lemon juice, letting them dry, then storing them in a large brown paper bag that is folded over multiple times. Place the bag in a cabinet, closet or cupboard until ready to use. Please visit www.lucky13clover.com for all your spiritual supply needs.
